Have you seen the capsule in which they have to travel to the top in?? they were saying on the news (for anyone who might have missed it) that ideally they would sedate them for this but they cannot do that because if the capsule gets stuck the occupant has to push the bottom open and climb back down!!! the capsule fits tight inside a metal tube and apparently this journey is going to be worse than anything they have experienced so far.
I am claustrophobic and when I saw it my immediate thought was that no way could I get inside that thing. Has anyone else been following this story?

Gemini, I don't follow that story closely because I just think it is too awful. We can't imagine what those men have been through or have still to go through. Their problems won't end when they are finally back up. God help them.

    Don't bear thinking about.

They are sueing the mining company, don't blame them. Lets hope they never have to go back down a mine.

They've said by this weekend but I'm doubtful. I would have thought it was best to play it safe and line the tunnel?

Either way, I wouldn't want to be down there let alone be the poor ****** who has to go down first to help them go back up :(

Does someone have to go down first?

I'm mildly claustrophobic and the thought of that chute is one I would rather not contemplate. Perhaps being miners they feel differently, but it still can't be pleasant! Still, the first reports said it would be closer to Christmas before they got out, so good progress is obviously being made.

At first paramedics were supposed to go down to assess the miners, now it's allegedly Navy commandos who'll have the eerie task.

Not in a million years for me but kudos to anyone who will :gnthb:

Before I changed careers I spent 5 years working in mines. The deepest was 1200 feet and we were raised and lowered pretty rapidly in a cage that was about 8 feet square. It didn't bother me at all, but I certainly don't fancy what's facing those chaps which is akin to being slowly winched up a drainpipe all alone.

"The accident in the small gold and copper mine has turned a spotlight on mine safety in
Chile, the world's top copper producer.."

Pete, found this bit in one of the reports. First time I have seen anything mentioned
    about what they are mining.

Hope they are rescued very soon - don't know how they have coped with being
    trapped down there so long.

Well I'm sure if it was owned by the boss I work for he would make sure that everyone that came up that tube carried a bag of ore.

Didn't I read at the beginning of all this that they wanted the men to lose weight so they would be able to fit in the capsule? What if it jams in the tunnel!
