What a fantastic pic Dave. I feel as if I could touch it. On the way back from the hospital today I could see it was a crescent moon, but looked nothing like your pic. Thanks for sharing your fantastic photography. 02

Great shot Dave, did you notice that just after sundown there was a fabulous shot of the crescent moon and Jupiter in close proximity to one another(optically of course).Tonight when the sun sets this evening, go outside and look south. The crescent Moon and Jupiter are gathering together again for a tight conjunction less than 3o wide, if the sky is clear Dave do try a shot I think you could do it justice.:thumb:

Thanks for that info Walnut. I'm set up to have a go this evening. The sky isn't looking too promising at the moment though:mad:

What a stunning photo Dave. Wish I was good at taking photos, but hey I don't need if people like you are around and willing to share their hard work - :)

    Thanks guys!

Shiney - It was taken with a 300m zoom lens (about = 480mm in 35mm terms) and it is an unenlarged crop of a much larger photo.
Walnut - I tried to get Jupiter with the moon tonight, but the sky was too light when they were close together. By the time I could see Jupter they were about 40 degrees apart - too much for the lens.

Here's this evening's photo and the full size original just to show the amount of cropping involved.

Pity about that Dave zooming in close does limit your overall field view, another great shot details fantastic here is a heads up for next month, less than a month from now, on Dec. 1st, something extraordinary will happen in the night sky. Venus, Jupiter and the crescent Moon are going to converge on a single, tiny patch of the heavens only a few degrees wide. Such an eye-catching, traffic-stopping triple conjunction can only be described as the backyard astronomy event of the year, so put that in your diary as you have just been appointed our official night sky photographer.

It's in the diary Walnut - thanks for the tip! I've just checked out the times on Heavensabove and looks like quite a narrow time frame between dusk and when moon and planets disappear below the horizon. I'll be set up to have a shot at it though:thumb:

What fabulous close ups. The Moon is really beautiful - I love spending time looking at it on clear nights.

    Wonderful photography Dave.

Walnut - that sounds like an unmissable coming together - reminds me of the triple conjunction that C S Lewis wrote about in Prince Caspian...

I wonder does it signify a world changing event....:cnfs:
