There was a stunning moonset this morning, on my drive into work looking over the North Downs, the Moon was just on the horizon around 7:15am. I tried to get a photo with my mobile phone camera but it was useless. I'm taking my digital camera with me tomorrow in case it's as beautiful. So tonight I had a practice, trying to find the best manual settings. It's a bit blurry and the contrast isn't great, I should have used a tripod too.

Am I right in thinking that the Moon will be in approx the same position tomorrow morning, maybe 20 minutes later and shifted to the east a bit?

John - that photo for a hand-held photo at 200mm is just about as good as it gets!!:dbgrtmb:
It's very difficult to get a decent photo of a full moon due to lack of contrast on the surface and you've done brilliantly there.
You are doing the right thing using manual settings as it's next to impossible to get a decent exposure on auto.

I'm not familiar with the version of PS you are using, but if affords you the capability to adjust 'curves' you may be able to bring out more tonal variation and a tweak to 'sharpness' might help also.

You are doing yourself down, that's a great shot.

Ermmm ... 28 days for 360 degrees ... so it will be 12 degrees further East same time tomorrow, and 20 minutes later (you having a lie-in?!!) is another 5 degrees. So I make that 17 degrees further East - a bit more than the distance between index-and-little finger open a wide open hand (held at arm's length) - that's got to be easier with a picture ... [Googles] ... here you go:

1 degree is the width of the moon - try covering it with your pinkie!

That's a fantastic photograph John and I would be really proud if I were you ... well done! :thumb:

I got some shots last night but I haven't had time to look at them .. but they are nothing special, just a bit spooky looking.

Thanks for that Dave, I had tried to sharpen up/adjust the contrast in PS, but it's a trade off with losing quality/detail. I'll try and find that 'curve' adjustment next time. I'm no expert with photoshop, I've only really used it on portraits to get rid of red-eye and touch up blemishes in the past. So it's been a useful experiment for me. I'll have to try again when it's a half moon and the crater shadows help give some depth.

Kristen: Thanks for the explanation of where the moon will be next. That's very useful. Unfortunately it was too cloudy this morning to even catch a glimpse of it.

Victora; yes I am quite pleased with myself, never having tried a shot like that before. I took about 20 or 30 images before finding settings that were just about right. That's the great thing with digital cameras, you just keep trying and the moon was a willing subject.

I'm sure you can do the maths at least as well as I can!
