On your gas pipe planting problem .Possibly if you plant a tree near the pipe it could possibly damage it . I am sure a few petunias and marigolds and small shrubs won't do any harm ?
Like Pete I have not heard of planting restrictions for utilities .

I'm not allowed to plant trees or shrubs, annuals would be possible but probably wouldn't survive at the base of a hedge that faces north east. It's really a struggle getting anything to grow here Harry, it's the most difficult garden I've ever had to work with because of position, sandy soil and weather conditions. I'm changing plants to mainly herbaceous perennials in my front garden because they are more likely to survive. I plant annuals too.

This is the Isle of Man Harry! :) You'd be surprised what we have to have planning permission for too.

Can they cut the pole off at 3ft above ground, it would be a feature, you could grow Clematis on it.

John I have said a couple of times that I want the pole out, it's one issue less to deal with in the bed. :)

In fact I'm sitting here with one eye on the window, it will be removed within the next hour!

I suppose you can fit a fake Wishing Well over the hole now Sheal , there is one on Ebay that lights up and plays "here comes the bride" , it's very tasteful

:heehee: I don't think so somehow Harry! I've already served 41 years!

I could have Loli but it's already gone. Yes it was a bit big to shove behind the shed. :heehee:

Bear with me now, I'm about to put the final pics up. :)

The pole has gone! A blow by blow account in pictures below. :) I was told before it was pulled out that it was earmarked as rotten, removal proved the point but it hadn't done bad, it had been there 66 years. The pole was 30ft long and ironically made from Douglas Fir. The hole was 9ft deep and I groaned when the men filled it with sand as I have a sandy soil! I will remove the top 2ft and replace it with soil and compost.

That's it folks! The skyline suddenly looks a lot bigger without the cables and the starlings aren't going to be pleased they've gone either, over a 100 used to gather on the cables spring and autumn.

My climbers will have a new frame in the bed but I won't be putting those back yet, or the couple of shrubs I dug out until later in the year. Meanwhile I'll fill the bed with annuals. :)

Thanks Harry but it needs filling up, there's to much bare soil for weeds to play havoc with.

Nice one didn't want to mention a truck,if left rotting wood in the ground causes honey fungus
which will kill most things including trees

That site looks very bare now. It could do with a totem pole to give the area a bit of height! :) :) :)
