[Warning: I've found both my soap box and my high horse for this one]

I've always said that the destruction of our society started with the oppression of youth.

"No Ball Games". How many times have you seen that sign near a piece of unused open space? Ok, can't play kickabout, lets just hang out on the street corners and 'be intimidating'.

I've seen signs saying that 'Groups of 2 or more' will be moved on. A group of 2 or more? A group of 2? That means that technically in those areas it is an offence to not be all by yourself. Great community attitude.

Anyone remember those 'Mosquito' things (the electronic device, not the fly), aimed at annoying youths?

This is a device designed and built for absolutely no other purpose but to annoy young people and prevent them from going near whatever you're trying to exclude them from.

What sort of society do we live in when we proactively persecute our own kids? No wonder some of them go off the rails.

I was raised to believe that we look to adults for guidance. I did. Now I'm the adult and I hope that kids I have contact with (my son, nephews etc) look to me for guidance and I will offer that guidance when they need it. But we send out such a strong message these days to kids saying loudly and boldly "WE HATE YOU FOR NO OTHER REASON THAN YOUR YOUTH", there's no wonder some of them don't look to adults for guidance.

Another saying I heard many, many times is, "you're old enough to know better". That implies (correctly in my opinion) that age brings experience which brings wisdom, which in turn implies that kids are more likely to be stupid that adults, and that adults should lead by example. The example we currently set is that it is ok to oppress and isolate and prejudge people just because of their age or uniform.
