Tell us the story behind your username and profile picture and your impressions on others'

Mine are straightforward, we had recently moved into UK from Southern Europe and I was feasting on Northern and Foreign foods that were not available down there. I had just bought a couple of celeriacs and the family was politely doubting whether they are actually intended for human consumption. So the celeriacs were on the table and the discussion going on in Finnish whilst I was joining the forum.

The profile picture was a quick fix with the kind assistance of The Teenager, in 2009 known as "The Baby". I intended to change it but as the years have gone by, the likeness is getting better and better so there it is. I have since bought new sunglasses.

@FatController as a name was for a while a dilemma, I initially thought of a person in my old management line who indeed could have been described as a Fat Controller. After reading some posts it quickly became obvious that the name referred to culinary practises rather than personality. :blue thumb:

I'm especially curious about the stories behind @noisette47 and @Loofah :)

I automatically thought of "Thomas the Tank Engine"
As for mine: 2008 trip to India and a visit to the Taj Mahal.

My Username name is, well ...

My Avatars change with the mood and season. Recently I had a pencil sketch photo of me taken last July. Currently it is of Hoover Van Dyson peeking out of the Jacaranda tree where he goes to after brekkies. As I live in the orange groves I have one for Orange Blossom, one for Almond Blossom, Poinsettia for the Holiday Season, and so on.

I am Canadian and my real first name is Lorraine - someone shortened it on me way back in high school and it stuck. I think my avatar reflects how lots of people picture us Canadian women. I stuck my face on this lumberjack to make a "tower of a woman" to play with theme. Imagine the surprise everyone had when I showed up at Shineyland without my axe! :heehee:

Mine is JR because when i was shot some years ago i decided to retire to the cotswolds to grow things and live a safer life.
My avatar is a reasonable likeness and i always wear the wide brim hat whilst gardening.

John558, well I ran the Radio Caroline Sales side of the organisation with my late Wife for over 30 years. 558 was one of the frequencies used.

Radio Caroline can be heard on 648AM, online and through your smart speaker.

My avatar is a beautiful Fox that visits my garden.

My (awkward) user name is the Jade Vine Strongylodon macrobotys which I first saw in Singapore back in the early 80's as it an amazing turquoise colour.
My avatar is the Little Bee Eater which I saw in Kenya on a safari in 2012.

Interesting thread...here's the story behind my user name.

I used to be into computer games - one in particular, which was a 3rd person shooter called 'Halo' - you may have heard of it? I can't play it now as I get motion sickness.

In this game you could, with other people, form teams and fight against other teams - these teams were called clans.

I could never be bothered to join a clan - hence my user name. It's stuck with me ever since.

The avatar is a different story. I read a book some years ago now called 'The top 5 regrets of the dying' - it recountered the experiences of a palliative nurse. One regret people had was not letting themselves be happy - they were always worrying about something - hence the smiley face.

'Michael Hewett' was one of my Devonshire ancestors who lived near Barnstaple in the 19th century.
My real name is Welsh and I don't like it,
and people who are not Welsh usually mispronounce it,
so you can call me Michael Hewett, Michael, or Mike ... (or even Mr Hewett if you want, but that doesn't sound so friendly  )

My present avatar is a cactus called Parodia magnifica. It's because I love cacti and I've been collecting them since 1965 when I was a teenager. I used to have over 100 different species but not so many these days.
I change my avatar sometimes because I get fed up with the same photo all the time.

My avatar is a picture of one of our golden retrievers called Logan.
So my user name is Logan after him. Sometimes I might change the pic to one of our other golden retrievers just for a change.

Sheal comes from my first name, shortened and in anagram form.

My avatar is an amazing, all metal bird feeder called the Orchid Tree and stands in the grounds of Cawdor Castle near Nairn in the Highlands.

Dear God! Nothing complicated about mine...Noisette = Hazelnut = Hazel = impossible for the French to pronounce. So I'm Noisette to friends. 47 is my département number. Imaginative, non? :roflol: The photo is of the start of my love affair with all things that grow (apart from cacti and bacteria!).

My avatar name is just one of the many nicknames I've had over the years. :noidea:

My picture is one of my friends from my travels. As mentioned in the recent 'what do you do in retirement' thread, one of the things we enjoy doing is travelling/exploring and seeing other countries and the way of life there. I got the travel bug whilst travelling to and from Africa with my work in the late 50's to early 60's. I also wrote travel guides since retiring 21 years ago.

Whilst we were touring Zanzibar we went looking for the Red Colobus Monkeys and were told we were unlikely to see any as they were not friendly and were scared of humans.

Someone seems to have forgotten to tell this tribe all about that :heehee:

My avatar - he followed me around whilst I was amongst the tribe.

                            Not friendly?

One unusual thing about them is that they don't have an opposable thumb (can see that in the third photo) but compensate with extra long fingers

After hours, possibly days of deliberation for a user name, I added an S to my first name. The avatar is a photo of our Cocker Molly. Not exactly an enthralling reason.
