Now, I know that we have a money saving thread (and please merge this if you feel its inappropriate mods), but I thought it might be a good idea if we could have a thread where we share supermarket bargain prices with a particular focus on their own brand basics that might well help us all in these austere times. Not all of these basics items are any good (some of them are pretty rotten to be honest), but there are some of them that are often as good as the branded equivalent.

Maybe if this is successful/helpful, it could be made a sticky for us all to refer to?

Before I go reeling stuff off, would this be of interest to anyone?

As an example of my idea:

Sainsbury's Basics Jaffa Cakes (24) - 80p saving 70p in comparison to the standard Sainsbury's Jaffa Cakes; these are fantastic; slightly crisper sponge than McVities but very tasty and I actually prefer them to McVities.

Personally I avoid the supermarkets as much as possible, because I've found life cheaper that way, but I say go for it. There are some things that you can't buy from the local greengrocer, butcher or farm shop and that's where the supermarkets come into it for me.

A good idea FC, but it won't work for me as our prices are different here.

There are very few local greengrocers around our way sadly, although I do prefer to use them whenever I can (the local baker's rolls are divine!); however, the other problem I have is shift work, which sees me right in supermarket territory. I do get my butcher meat from a very good online, free range butcher, delivered blast frozen direct to my freezer (excellent they are too - happy to recommend to anyone interested)

Shame Sheal, but perhaps it might even help you even if only to tell you what is good and what isn't? I've just sat tonight and done a spreadsheet for a load of Sainsbury's Basics stuff that we have bought over the weeks, and to be honest the vast majority of it has been perfectly acceptable; the best of it is, I worked out that if we bought every item on the list it came to £40.24; buying the standard Sainsbury's brand equivalent would come to £76.86 - now that is one hell of a saving! Particularly when you consider how much higher the price would be in comparison to brand names.

One good example is dishwasher tablets - we were buying Finish or Fairy at an average of £9.99 a pack; I decided to give the Sainsbury's Basics a whirl, and emptied the box of them in with the remainder of a box of Finish so that we got whichever one we got when we put our hand into the box - - honestly, not a jot of difference between the two. The Basics price? £2.40 for a box of 40 tablets versus £9.99 for 32 Finish tablets, and all because it comes in a plain white box.

Even at your dearer prices FC it's still cheaper than here. Once again the import costs put the price on ours unfortunately. The only well known supermarket here is Tesco's and there is only one shop on the island, other supermarkets are 'home grown'.

I'll never shop in sains again, nor tescos.

I'm using asda, Morrisons, and aldi. Plus home bargains for the toiletries/cleaning stuff.

We tried Aldi, and it was a disaster really - couldn't find stuff that we wanted, and we weren't impressed with the stuff we did get. The nearest Asda is OK, but its a pain to get to and you have to pay for parking, and the bulk of the rest are Sainsbury's and Tesco.

We fell out with Tesco years back after a number of problems (rancid chickens well within date, and a huge lump of fence wire in a bag of salad leaves to name but a few problems), which is what drove us to Sainsbury's in the first place - to be fair, we find that we are getting (generally) a decent blend of quality and price from them, although admittedly Asda are probably a wee bit cheaper for the same quality/price.

Morrisons are a non starter for us as there isn't one nearby.

It wasn't just Tesco. Its why I packed in the supermarkets. There is a very strange law about use-by dates on meat, in that the retailer, in certain circumstances, is allowed to change it on whim. That renders the date absolutely pointless.

Also, my sister works in a certain well known supermarket chain, and she told me once, "If you knew some of the things we're told to do, you would never buy your meat from there again". She didn't elaborate so I guess it could be the same everywhere.

No help to me as I haven't bought much branded stuff for years, I always choose own brand alternatives. Unlike FC I'm an Aldi fan, though over the years I've worked out which of their products I like and which to avoid: extra mature cheddar, soya milk and luxury muesli are all great, for example. And all basic ingredients such as fruit, veg, eggs, milk etc.

I am massively cynical about most of the stuff on offer in big supermarkets. Most processed/pre-prepared food (and that might be as much as 75% of it nowadays) is over-priced and seriously bad quality, IMO. Even if it's got a label on saying Extra Special or Truly Irresistible or whatever. (Extra Special profits, more like.)

So I stick to buying raw ingredients and a small range of tried and tested ready made foods - Bonne Maman jam, for example.

But then, I haven't got a picky family to please. However, if I did, I'd make sure I was training them to enjoy properly cooked home-made stuff.

RE-EDITED - hopefully this will be better:
