2045: The Singularity $1000 buys a computer a billion times more powerful than all human brains today. This means that average and even low-end computers are hugely smarter than even highly intelligent, unenhanced humans. The Singularity occurs as artificial intelligences surpass human beings as the smartest and most capable life forms on the Earth. Technological development is taken over by the machines, who can think, act and communicate so quickly that normal humans cannot even comprehend what is going on; thus the machines, acting in concert with those humans who have evolved into postbiological cyborgs, achieve effective world domination. The machines enter into a "runaway reaction" of self-improvement cycles, with each new generation of A.I.s appearing faster and faster. From this point onwards, technological advancement is explosive, under the control of the machines, and thus cannot be accurately predicted. The Singularity is an extremely disruptive, world-altering event that forever changes the course of human history. The extermination of humanity by violent machines is unlikely (though not impossible) because sharp distinctions between man and machine will no longer exist thanks to the existence of cybernetically enhanced humans and uploaded humans. Is this a good idea? I'd rather die a human than become a cyborg i think. Looks like I'm gonna have to make that choice in my lifetime too.
The world is already run by computers. Where do you think all the world's money went? Next time you get in your car, just give a moment's thought to the little computer under the dash or in the centre console that is busily working out how best to run your engine for you given just one input from you, and hundreds from various sensors. And then when that old biddy steps off the curb in front of you without looking, and you ram the middle pedal into the floor, you probably wont have time to spare a thought for the little computer whose job it is to make hundreds of adjustments per second to keep your car under control while doing its best to avoid killing said biddy. Take a deep breath and then be on your way, til you encounter a set of traffic lights, running off a computer program whose job it is to work out from a limited number of human inputs, but a considerable number of sensors, how best to manage traffic flow. Pull into the petrol station to get some fuel, and trust that the computer in the petrol station has been raising orders for more fuel deliveries so that you may actually have some, and then go and pay with your debit card, and trust the computer in the shop to talk via a number of other computers to the computer in the bank, which will then decide if you have enough funds available to authorise the transaction and then debit your account. I could go on and on, but it would make for a long write up, which I'm doing on my computer, and posting to someone else's computer, so that you might read it on your computer.
i quite like the idea of being a cyborg! kinda like universal soldier but not...."universal gardener" I could have alsorts of gardening gadgets built intomy body and i could download the entire contents of GC in a fraction of a second
