...we've just had a phone call from my sister-in-law telling us that her 11 year old son had just come in from his last day at school in tears as some low lifes had approached him and stolen his beloved bmx bike from him. The poor lad worshipped his bike, it had all the trimmings, he spent most of his spare cash on it and needs it to get to school, to see his family and friends.

So all the family are now going to try and chip in to see if we can him another bike before he goes back to school in January....

The only positive to take from it being that he didn't get physically harmed.....

The police were informed and are investigating but I doubt they'll see the bike again, it'll either be sold for a pitance if they know what its worth or slung in the canal if it was just taken to get somewhere.....

And just a week before Christmas too, hope he gets over this enough to enjoy Christmas....

OMG, so sorry to hear that Bilbo.

Don't suppose you had any serial number for the bike:(

Still, the main thing is that he is safe. Like you say, the bike is replaceable.

Rotten thing to do just before Christmas. Lets hope the saddle fails on them & that they will never be able to reproduce.

Oh, ask your Sister in Law to check her house insurance to see if there is any cover, a long shot I know, but worth a look.

Even if they catch the little a-holes nothing will be done to them. I hope he gets his bike back though, poor lad.

a few years ago, my daughter had the same .... I bought her a Brompton fold up bike from auction (and paid £160) ... worth a lot more if bought new

she had it for several months, always locked it ... went to our village Tesco, forgot to take the bike lock with her ... went inside for 5 minutes and came out and the bike was gone

ended up replacing it with a 1940's dutch bike off ebay .... and now, she makes sure she locks it wherever she goes

sad here in cambridge ... there are gangs of bike thieves who target the expensive bikes in the city ... even if it is locked, they have large bolt cutters etc ... and there are some hooded thieves who steal bikes from the collegues/universities

          easy money for them

and then we have the drunk students who 'kick in' the spokes of bikes parked in the city when students/kids go on a night out
