Thats a real pain, I've had it happen to me a couple of years ago - in fact the credit card company spotted the dodgy transactions and rang me up out the blue. I got all my money back in the end but it took a long time. I don't understand why the thieves aren't easily caught, on mine thay had bought rail tickets and various goods online which had to go to a delivery address - it doesn't take much guessing where they lived.

Just on the phone now to the bank who are having technical difficulties....

No idea who or how but they're all online transactions. Will be interested to hear if they can figure out how it happened!

Good luck with sorting that out Andy.
I was glad when I gave my company card up for good.
I was lucky over the years but there was one or two strange payments on workmates cards.

Sorry to hear what's happened Andy. You'll get the money returned, but it's just the hassle of it all.

Even more annoying, the banks no longer report these crimes to the police. According to credit card companies and banks, since the advent of chip and pin, credit card fraud is great reduced. B*****s!!

Andy, really sorry to hear that. As Aaron says you will get the money returned but what hassle it causes in the meantime. Hope it gets sorted for you soon.

In case it makes you feel a little better - my credit card was cloned THREE times last year. Each time the credit card co rang me so they knew before I did. I got the money back each time but of course I had to have a new card each time with a new pin number. I never use ATMs and never let the card out of my sight so how it was cloned I have no idea.

    It's happening far to often.
My son in law had his debit card cloned at the petrol station .
The bank spotted it and he got his money back.

I too am so sorry to hear of this Loofah as it happened to a cousin of mine last year and within hours of shopping in one of the major Supermarkets and the culprit Very fortunately caught and dealt with severely. The last I Heard, she was inside for it.

My cousin had her card cloned within hours and 'Used' several thousand miles away less than 24 hours later, but due to a Very alert member of staff at her Bank, they telephoned and asked where she was at that time, because Most unusally, her card was trying to be used abroad and hours after shopping at this same supermarket. My cousin hasn't even got a Passport, let alone been abroad other than to the Isle of Wight.

With respect Everybody, I use the Cashpoints, but before I do, I make sure there is nothing untoward about that machine, then memorising the numbers on the keypad, I ALWAYS put my finger over the number 5, cover my hand and then move it to the actual number of the start of the PIN. Many a time I have seen people openly enter their PIN as I stood there and could have Very easily had a miniature camera trained on their card, plus the keypad to gain their PIN, while I always stand back. Another point I make is, that IF I feel somebody is standing too close for comfort, I CANCEL my transaction, let them use it, then return after them.

People waiting should be Made to stand a certain distance from the customer in front, NOT looking over the shoulder of the person in front.

Morning folks! Thanks for the support:)

The bank have stopped the card, filled in their form and said that they'll credit the cash back, which is good. Then they will send out a declaration for me to sign saying that 'it wasn't me, guv' and then, presumeably, start an investigation...

    So far so painless lol

Oops, spoke too soon! Just checked and another £800 has disappeared! Think that may have happened before they cancelled the card though...

Good points Mikkel, but sometimes there is just no way you can do anything about it. A couple of years ago a gang set up in our local Shell petrol stations and had modified the card readers, there were no extra cameras or anything suspicious. They were skimming the information from our cards and then making clones, all done electronically. The gang stole several millions, eventually they were caught and the main culprits are now inside. Thats why Shell stations stopped chip & pin for a while nationally, they have reverted back again - but I doubt we are much safer.

At least using a credit card gives you some protection against this fraud. I never ever use debit cards for any kind of shopping now, there is no guarantee you will get all your money back using a debit card. :thumb:

When all the ruckus kicked off last year with holiday companies and airlines going bust, we were all told to use credit cards to book such things, as we were guaranteed protection that way. Problem is, so many credit cards insist on a booking fee, which if you're spending a lot of money, can be a substantial whack of cash!
