              Looks a bit like insect damage, or possibly keeping in a damp cold atmosphere.
              I've seem it before, once its marked like that there is not much you can do other than improve the growing conditions, to stop the same thing happening on the next bit of new growth.

              The plant also seems to have a slightly marbled effect, is it a variegated one?

                Oh, it might besuffering a bit then, but I wouldn't like to say from what.

                The first look at it makes me think it is lacking light.
                Has he watered it and left it wet? Those black bits look a bit like the markings you get from over watering. It should be kept dry in the winter unless it starts to look very thirsty.

                  Is he sure it isn't Scale Zigs.. I had a Euphorbia that looked like that & it got scale.. Looked a bit like that at times if it is..
                  His does look a little sickly though it should be a nice green colour not mottled looking.... :scratch: Which could be because it is under attack or maybe need a re-pot.. This is a good site to start at..

                    Im sure i found something similar on one off ours,i think i just sliced it out delicately at dusted with yellow sulpher powder but i dont remember any mottled effect :scratch:
