I had to go into the loft to do some repairs and renew the mouse treats  and spotted these:-

I guess this used to be a wasp nest.

I haven't the faintest what these might be . Any ideas?
    Thanks in advance. :)

They look old and, possibly, empty. About 2" across

This doesn't have a hole in it so I guess it may be occupied. It's about 3" across. I don't want to harm it if it isn't harbouring something bad for us.

I've been told wasps only use the nest for one year, not sure if that is true, they make a new one somewhere else each year.

Yep one year one nest. I really don't like wasps, I've had them in previous years. Any other insect but wasps, they give me the cold sweats

Definitely wasps. And they do build a new one each year. Over here they sell plastic replicas that can be hung around your yard and thinking there is already a hive in place, the wasps then go elsewhere to build. You miht try to bag and remove the one you think is active but leave the rest in place to discourage any new guests?

I don't care for them either. We have black ones over here too. Particularly evil looking devils!

Are the little ones wasp nests as well? They're only tiny compared to the main one - which I recognise as a wasp nest. They're between two and three inches across and look complete.

What puzzles me is that the third small one doesn't appear to have a hole in it.

We usually get wasps nesting in our loft each year so that's definitely what you have. The entrance hole will be at the top and they probably get in through a gap in the tiles straight into the nest.

The nest is highly flammable so take care, inside the bigger ones will be the honeycomb with hopefully dead larvae.

If no one is home remove it.
              It will have a hole.
If you cut it open you can see how exquisitely they are made.

By the way..mouse treats..they love peanut butter...far better than cheese!

I can see that the big one has fallen apart and two of the smaller ones look empty but I can't tell whether the one where I can't see a hole is occupied or not. I don't want to disturb it and then have any angry wasps chasing me around the loft :yikes:

The job I was doing in the loft was taping up the bitumenised roofing felt where it was split. There were some quite big tears in it so I used Gorilla tape. There are some more in other parts of the loft :doh:but not as big. So I'll have to get round to doing them.
