You sure that's a good idea Zigs? although maybe your local is better than mine ... 90% of the veg that my local garden centre have in modules right now is totally inappropriate for planting now ... along with all the acid-loving plants they put out to tempt people - no acid soil within at least 30 minutes drive from here ...

Why do they do that? Well I know it's to make money but it's so unfair to a beginner. To be honest it would put me off using that garden centre to buy anything but then maybe they all do it? I'm not sure as I don't grow any veggies - yet!

As for acid-loving plants, I suppose they could be planted in a pot but not everyone knows this. Perhaps any beginner, before running the gauntlet of the garden centre, has to fully arm themselves with knowledge via the internet!

Why not try some rhubarb - I tried growing some in a raised bed but the squirrels kept digging it up?

Indeed. But I suppose for newbies they just think "Pity that didn't grow, I must have done something wrong" ...

Personally I think it would be better if the Garden Centre put up a sign "Requires acid soil, please ask if you don't know what type you have" ... it would restrict sales - and repeat sales too! </CynicalMe!>
