I had the tedious job of thinning my carrots yesterday, is there a way of sowing them so the thinning is easier or no thinning at all would be better.:dh:

You should consider netting them as the smell from the thinnings will attract the carrot fly :(

You can station-sow - a few seeds every few inches, but then you spend ages sowing them ... some people mix the seed with sand, so its easier to sow thinner.

I have broadcast the seed (rather than in rows). Its harder to seed what's-a-weed :( and I pull early smaller carrots from the more crowded areas first, giving the others more space to mature.

This year I have sown some in paper pots. Our soil is heavy clay, so it is as much to give them decent depth to grow in. That's a lot of labour per-carrot though;)

I have used paper pots this year with just one seed in each pot.
Yes it is time consuming, but I have the time these days.
As soon as the little seedlings popped up they were into the garden correctly spaced. No thinnings required.!
As there is only the two of us I do not need vast amounts so I am going for size rather then quantity which I went for last year and had several runt carrots amonst the harvest.
