Has anyone got Carol Kleins "Grow Your Own Veg" book. Thinking of buying it--Im a beginner!! I watch the programme-- very arty and all that but a bit short on actual practical advice. Wondering whether the books the same?

Hi Bunslip, I would think that the book will be along the lines of the TV programme I'm afraid, I agree with Dendrobium about the Hessayon expert series of books, very good for beginners regards Steve.

Thanks Dend and Plotty. Have got the expert book so should just launch and start growing I suppose. Haven't got much room for a veg plot, but will give it a go with containers methinks.Anything I should watch out for?

    Watch out for? [IMG]
Birds that mistake your new peas for worms and pull them out of the ground
    Rabbits that love your lettuce
Children who love your peas before they reach the pot
    and such like ..........

Its got a so-so intro but a very very good reference section. I saw it in w h smiths at £13 and though " What a Bargain" ! Then I went online, and bought it from www.bookdepository.co.uk for £11.54 including delivery. It arrived 2 days after ordering . Its been well thumbed since and Im very pleased with it.

there's another very good back called the Vegetable Gardeners Bible. written by a very nice american guy, it has a nice tone to it and is full of info. It's an easier read than the Experts one, but they're about as good as one another

I have a paperback called Growing Vegatables by Tony Biggs. I first got it over 20 years ago when i had my first allottment. I have just had a read through because I am getting back into veg growing and it is very well thumbed. I have always referred to it for things like sowing dates, planting distances and possible varieties. It a straightforward no nonsense book. They have a new edition out and I reckon it would be hard to beat. I have not come across any book that comes anywhere near it for advice on technique for beginners- I have the Hessayon Expert series and the Vegetable Garden displayed by the RHS but this is in a different league.
