I spent all weekend weeding the gravel! It was more like a lawn - but as I weeded the patch under where the canary cage has been hanging outside this summer, one of the plants seemed familiar as I pulled it out, so I went to check with OH (an ex-policeman) and I was right - it was CANNABIS!
He suggests we should train the canary to use a hydroponics system next time.
The kids were quite dissappointed that I had pulled it out!

    I'll bet! :D
The things we feed those birds......

One hesitates to ask, though - why was it familiar?

Better not answer that one, fmay!!

My worst mistake was to set up a chain for my hanging basket production attached at one end to the rose arch, and at the other, to the bird table. I had a few customers asking about this interesting plant growing in their hanging baskets. OOPS!!

    BTW - use a hoe, if it isn't compacted - it's much faster! :D

My late father used to breed/show/judge canaries, so we always had lots of hemp seeds sprouting !!! this was years ago before it became fashionable :D (He also used to feed them the yellow of eggs to make the birds more yellow !!! ) M-L

I thought they'd stopped putting hemp seeds into bird feed about 30 years ago as people had twigged it was a legal way to buy it, I remember reading about it at the time.

I was under the impession that the hemp seed that you can buy is different from the one used as a drug.
I remember a farmer was growing it around here somewhere a few years back, legally, as a crop, presumably for the fibre.

Cannabis sativa subsp. indica is the "banned substance" hemp from which is derived marijuana. Cannabis sativa subsp. sativa has no narcotic properties and is widely grown commercially. Cannabis gives us the word "canvas" which was made from hemp as was rope and cordage. It is a member of the hop family.

For my sins, I also keep parrots and hemp seed aka Cannabis sativa has always been an ingredient in their feed. Peridiocally, I chuck out a few handfuls for the wildlife into the lane behind (daren't admit to feeding grey squirrels) and unusual plants often appear. The most prominent after the sunflowers are cannabis seedlings. I must emphasise that out of curiosity only and for no other reason, I occasonally allowed a few to develop. Although I've no idea whether there were any appreciable levels of T.H.C. they certainly looked 'the biz'.
