I've just seen this year's drink driving ad on telly. I found it shocking, but probably not for the reason intended.

It shows a bloke finishing his second large glass of wine, when he gets asked to run a driving errand. It briefly shows him being killed in a crash, before revealing that he refused to drive and is therefore ok.

The thing I find shocking is the implication that he'd have been ok to drive if only he hadn't had the second glass. Ie, he'd be still ok to drive after the first glass.

The glass was a big glass. Personally I'd refuse to drive if I'd had just one large glass of wine. There are studies to show that one large glass of wine is enough to significantly impair someone's judgement and reaction speed. But it doesn't take scientific study to prove what should be common sense.

One large glass of wine is enough to make you a dangerous driver. Surely this should be the message in the ad.

I used to know a guy who drank heavly (he died of a pickeled kidney) now, when he was at work, in the monings you had to keep well away from him when he was driving his crane, but once he had his morning drink he was the best driver you could wish for

      Scary ain't it!
When we were young we had a mate who was only safe behind the wheel after he'd had a few as he didn't want a DD conviction. When he was sober he drove like a total nutjob.

As far as driving after a drink goes I never did it. When I was in my youth I was sent on a course at an airfield - we completed a series of tests sober and then repeated them a few times after every drink. Talk about an eye opener.

Hubby was a retained fire fighter for years, I know only too well of the effects of drink driving & for me it's a NO NO.
I personally think you shouldn't be able to drink & drive at all! Also I believe there needs to be more education about drugs & driving.

And as if she went out without making arrangements to get home.

On the rare occasions when wife and I go out boozing at this time of year, we book our taxi home well in advance. We've found that mosttaxi companies don't mind if you phone them an hour before they are booked to collect you to change the pickup time slightly if our plans change, and if they have nothing available for the revised time, they still keep you booked in for the original booked time.

If my missus was going out without me, I'd stay sober so I could collect her when she was ready.

my husband does not drink when we are out. I usually have a martini and then one wine with dinner. So he does the driving. If I know I am to drive, then I only have one drink with a good substantial dinner. My aunt was killed by a drunk. he went to jail, and died there.

                Driving after drinking?
Who knows when they are legal to drive after drinking?
My Cousin in Oz got done the following day.

Its a total minefield as the law stands, and I think always will be, the testing of alcohol in the blood, or even worse, the amount of alcohol in breathe strikes me to be misleading.
I've heard even mouth wash can give a positive reading.
As to drugs, can they detect all kinds, and do they actually have tests that work.

I sometimes think the old idea of actually testing someone to see if they can actually perform in a sensible manner was a better idea.

Only once have I ever knowingly done it, and for a relatively short distance to a hospital in an emergency; I was in a nightclub many, many moons ago, and a girl in our group started bleeding profusely (and I do mean profusely) - ambulance was called, however we were told that it could be a while as they were all dealing with a major accident that had taken place on the motorway, and could we get her in ourselves. As the least rubbered of the bunch, and the one that was the go-to guy when it came to driving anything with wheels, I was duly nominated.

I have never felt so bad in my life - horrible experience. The only upside is that the girl in question was whipped into theatre pretty quickly and recovered just fine. The walk home from the hospital was a long one, as was the walk back on the following afternoon to pick the car up again. Never again.
