Hi - I recently ordered some "free" perennial's from the Internet and 21 bare roots have arrived in the post.

Should I put these into storage through the winter and plan in the Spring? If so, how should I store them durign the winter? They did not come with any storage instructions.

    Thanks, Nick

Nick, you don't say what type of plants, bulbs, corms, tubers, woody, aquatic or herbaceous. Nevertheless, in general if they have been sent out this season they are likely to be dormant, as such they would stay that way till spring if kept cold and moist. They can be 'healed in' (a fancy way of saying temporarily planted) outdoors. This is fine if you don't have the planting position quite ready yet but you should try and get them planted out as soon as possible.

oooh I ordered these as well yesterday via Gardeners World. The offer is still online - just pay postage of £4.90! Bargain if you ask me.

Off the top of my head the link is http://www.thompson-morgan.com/gw591

After all the advice I got on creating a cottage garden I now have a list of plants for my collection thanks to the v.nice people at Gardeners Corner :D

      Hi Nick,

I'm not sure why Thompson and Morgan are sending out bare root perennials now as late winter / early spring is a much better time to plant. Do they look totally dormant (brown and lifeless) or is there growth still on them? I know that a lot of my perennials still have growth on after our warm autumn.

If you prefer to store them over winter put them into crates or pots of soil or compost somewhere sheltered (cold greenhouse or coldframe or just a cosy corner of the garden) and keep them moist but not waterlogged over winter and then plant them out feb / march when the weather starts to get better.

If you can't do that then it is probably best to get them into the ground asap while the weather is still ok. Either where you want them, or if the bed is not ready then heel them in as Jim says.

anyway, you are gonna have quite a display with that lot next year :yay:

They did say in the advert that orders before 14th November would be sent out straight away otherwise they will be sent in the New Year sometime. I always forget I've ordered things so it's always a nice surprise when the postie arrives months later with a bundle of plants!

I ordered a similar batch of bare root plants from Van Mewuen which arrived a fortnight or so ago. I put them into pots in the greenhouse to overwinter (as per instructions). Trouble is, with the warm weather we've been having, they have all sprouted into quite strong growth now!! I hope they won't be blighted when the cold weather does arrive.
