P1020180.JPG P1020179.JPG Mr Kandy popped out for an hour earlier this afternoon to have a leg stretch from being cooped up with me for most of the day. He decided to walk up at the old Airfield at Harrington where we often go birdwatching to hopefully see some rare birds.

He came home quiet unhappy and showed me the two photos he took of what some Mindless Vandals have done to two of the Grade 2 listed Thor Missile bunkers that have been there since the Cold War and are now deemed a good example of Cold War architecture.

It is such a shame as they have now turned this important site into an eyesore with this Graffiti.I know they are only lumps of concrete but the airfield played an important part in I believed the 2nd World War and also in the Cold War and when you walk round the site there are more parts of it to see and there is even an old blast wall on one part of the airfield.

I don't know if this stuff can be cleaned off but even if it can it is going to cost the local council who we pay our council tax to a lot of money to try and restore them,if that is what they decide to do.We haven't a clue as to how long they have been like this as we have been doing a lot of flat walking since I had my knee problems before Xmas

I get annoyed at some of the graffiti over here. As you say, they are nasty dunces who do this.

It's quite an easy job to remove, just the chemicals and kit to do it are expensive. I've done it before but the trouble is, it leaves a clean patch :yikes:

I have mixed feelings about this.

On one hand, I think brightly coloured graffiti art doesn't work well in the countryside. Therefore in this case I agree it is annoying that the site has been vandalised.

But on the other hand, some graffiti art is actually really good, and in the right setting, can brighten a place up. Our local train line passes through some seriously dilapidated, in some cases long abandoned heavy industrial plants. It's dirty and filthy and grim and orrible. It's only saving grace is that about a mile of it has been covered in graffiti art. It's like one big art gallery now.

The other thing to remember is that since all forms of youthful fun have been outlawed (even urban green spaces have signs saying no ball games, and town centres have signs saying that groups of one or more youths will be moved on by police), the only outlet youths have to express themselves are illegal. That being the case, I personally would prefer them to be out of town painting some abandoned structure, than being about being obnoxious.

In a town near us the local council commissioned some of the youths to do graffiti on the walls of all the pedestrian and cycle underpasses. It brightened things up, the work was excellent, the youths very proud of their work and they also police the sites to make sure their work isn't messed up. :dbgrtmb:

Prior to that there was a problem with random graffiti and the council had asked for ideas to try and solve the problem. I suggested that they work with the offenders and this was the result.
