Threave House Estate is situated near Castle Douglas, Dumfries and Galloway, Scotland.

There were plenty of plants still in bloom for the second week of September and it was definitely worth a visit. I had problems with the light as most of the pictures had to be taken looking towards the sun.

          Hi Sheal,

It looks beautiful there. It still looks like summer.

          I love the Convulvulus/Ipomea.

With work currently on going on the estate this building is being used as a tea room. It has a wonderful view over the landscape in the distance, post #1, picture 3.

Aha... The infamous Begonia Fuchsioides makes an appearance :)

I bet it's a great day out there. Is that the area you want to settle in ?

Yes and it was a lousy out of focus picture too!

We had two hours there, I couldn't twist other half's arm any further, he's not a gardener by any means!

It was, but the jury's still out on that one, it's not the Highlands and that's where we'd like to be. I'll give you an update after the weekend and a discussion with my eldest. :)

You were right on my old stomping ground there @Sheal - - I was born and brought up less than 20 miles from there; beautiful part of the country.

Near to Threave, there is a loch called Loch Ken which is currently in the news as it is stuffed with American Red Signal Crayfish which are squeezing the native species out - still a lovely loch to potter about in a boat on though

@Sheal - if you go Highlands, I would quite strongly suggest the West Highlands, purely as the climate is a tad more favourable.

Don't forget, PM me anytime if you want to pick a brain.

Yes, we saw Loch Ken briefly in passing. We covered every square inch of Galloway while we were away. :) Even did some motorhome shopping!

I know the Highlands fairly well. :)

Sounds like you had a good time. I used to love a run up the east side of Loch Ken, then cut through the forest park over to Clatteringshaws and down the Queens Road back toward Newton Stewart - - gorgeous at any time of the year, and loads of deer and stags knocking about, especially around Clatteringshaws :)

We stopped off at Clatteringshaws Loch but it was getting late so didn't have a chance to walk far. Newton Stewart, about ten miles away was where we did most of our shopping (we were self catering). We stayed at Kirkmabreck near Carsluith. :) The only wildlife we saw was a red squirrel.

More pubs in Newton Stewart than anything - always did amaze me how many pubs for such a small town. Our @ARMANDII would love Clatteringshaws - great place to set up camp and watch the night sky with little or no light pollution.

Carsluith is nice enough, but a bit underwhelming to be honest - I always thought the likes of Port William and even Sand Green were a bit more picturesque; loads of wee nooks and crannies along that coast though, so it would take you months to see them all.
