Can anyone help me with Thunderbird please?

I have had this on my PC for a while now and still am unable to get it to work. I have also contacted the Firefox people and they cannot understand why it fails to work on my PC.
System Win7, Plenty of cache, stacks of memory, speed is not an issue, and no conflictions as my daugthers man has had a look and cannot find any problems with it.
Seems to me that the mail side of things will not work.
I have to use the msn and hotmail for now but would like to use Thunderbird just to see if it will work.
Not afraid of new stuff, but would like to know more.
    Thanks.

Thankyou Wiseoldowl, for your swift response to a somewhat novice to PC's.:love30:
I however am not able to try this method out until possibly after the weekend due to working nights until then.:gaagh:
I shall have my future son-in-law look at it for me and get his opinion on what you have offered up. He does put the things together and has better understanding of the workings than I do.:dbgrtmb:
He may well say why did I not ask him instead of bothering others with this small insignificant step.:nono:
Maybe small to him, but gigantic to me.:sofa: Broke the last one doing things I should have let him do.:dunno:

Any problems with Thunderbird are nearly always due to a corrupt profile.
I usually rename the existing profile and restart Thunderbird so that it creates a new profile. I then copy my Mail folder etc from the old profile to the new one.

    Thunderbird profiles are at....

    C:\Users\Your Name\AppData\Roaming\Thunderbird\Profiles\xxxxxxxx.default\

    Or type...

    %APPDATA%\Thunderbird\Profiles\

    in the Run Command box

Thank you for the offers of assistance, but I feel this maybe one step to far.
I have limited knowledge of how to use the PC and have no understanding of what has been kindly layed out by kevinm. Not the brain that is willing to get to know this but time against me as working shifts. Shame that this new device is the one thing that has brought so many arguments of which is best and what is better than that.
Seems that technology has upped and passed me by without the pause button being there to say hold on what didn't I get in the last part.
Sorry for sounding so confused but that is the nature of the beast. :dunno:
