Has anyone ever grown Tigridia from seed ( I'm thinking probably of @longk and @Sheal { I seem to remember you doing other Irises from seed } here ).
I have a lot of home-produced seed and was wondering if it's worth it. And, also the when, how etc.

They germinate easily in a warm spot. Sow the seeds in a large enough pot so that they have space between them and pot on in the spring whilst the young bulbs are still dormant. They should bloom in two to three years.
Worth doing as you can get some interesting colour variations.

I've not grown them Anthony but it would seem from looking around on the web that they are easy to germinate, although it is stated they can take 20-40 days. :)

I'm just about to retrieve my 'Ensata' seeds from the fridge which aren't quite so simple to get under way. Nothing ventured, nothing gained, it's worth giving them a go. :)

        Thanks both :)

Longk, when you say " pot on in the Spring ....... ", is that next year as they will still be too young this year won't they ?

Do they need any cold stratification or owt to get them started ?

It was the colour combinations I was thinking about when I saved them.

Sheal, I thought It was you who was growing the Ensata seeds that's why I thought of you.

          Thanks Longk :)

When they get going you can have some if you want :)

I bought some new bulbs today to go with the ones I saved last year. I think I'm getting addicted to them.

Iris seedlings usually put on growth fairly quickly I find. According to what I'd read they won't need stratification but they do need a temperature of around 18C to germinate.

I'm having a go at Pacific Coast as well, I've got eight pots of those outside, whether they've stratified I don't know as it's been a warm winter. I'll be moving them into the greenhouse at the weekend which hopefully will trigger them into growth. It'll be interesting to see the results I get from those as every one could be a different colour apparently.....if they come up of course. :)

I wouldn't mind some as I left mine behind when I moved in 2012 :blue thumb:

Certainly true of most tuberous species. Some of the bulbous species seem to take longer in my limited experience.

I reckon they will have seen enough cold. Some of the nights have been a bit parky.

I hope so, we've only had a couple of nights at 4C and nothing below that.

Only a couple as Anthony says, the pots are in my carport so they don't get blown around the garden. :)
