    Hi everyone,

I've had the Bosch shredder model AXT 25 D for a number of years now but having used it the recently I thought it wasn't working as well as it had in the past. I'm not sure whether to take it and have it serviced, pretty sure it will need a new chopping blade which aren't cheap, or would that be false economy given its age and should I consider a new one in which case what are the contenders as a replacement? I've seen some that are around half the price of a new AXT 25 D but if they aren't up to much maybe it's best to go with the Bosch again. Any thoughts please?

I've got a similar Bosch model, what exactly is wrong with it?

    Hi

I have had a couple of shredders , to be honest just a waste of money and time.

    branches too thick
    Conifer branches too sappy
    clogs up
    Blades blunt
I could go on lol, by the time of cutting it small enough to add I might as well taken to the local tip

now if it’s the one the tree surgery guys use , yes I will have one of them.

I've chipped lots of stuff through my one, I find it very useful, it takes time but I have that these days:smile: and yes get the odd clog up when stuff is too leafy, but I usually try to mix it up, leafy stuff followed by woody stuff to clear any blockages.

The end result is a pretty good product as well, I use it mostly on paths but for composting its ideal.

Have a look at Fred's Shed site, he tries out and recommends all sorts of Garden equipment.

@Spruce I've used shredder for many years and found them to be anything but a waste of time. As long as a mix of brown and green wood is fed in together I rarely ever got a jam and the resulting chippings are great to either add to compost or use directly as a mulch.

          I agree.
I bought a Bosch AXT 25TC recommended on his site in 2016.
I use it 3-4 times a year and cannot fault it.
It's quiet, self feeds and rarely clogs.
The shreddings go into the compost bin.

Seems the part required to be
            • 2609002763 which is a wicked £305
            • From illustrations it would seem to be detachable and could possibly be reground or improved with a diamond sharpener. This would be my first action. It must have a corresponding edge with which it meshes

We have two shredders like this one - see picture- one was from Lidl, the other is almost identical but a known brand ( sorry forgotten which) but bought from a big store like Wickes or B and Q. Both cost around £100. Have had them for probably ten years, still going strong, and enable us to keep our 1.4 acre garden under a slight semblance of control! They are the ones that pull the stuff in, so you don’t have to push it. I don’t have much of a problem with them getting blocked, although OH does, but that’s because he tends to stuff too much in at once, and doesn’t alternate between very leafy cuttings and twiggy bits like I do! Having two, means we can run both at once and get through a huge pile of cuttings in a very short time. Or we can run one, and then let it cool down while running the other one. Been really pleased with them.

If my dearly beloved old Bosch shredder dies, I'll go out and buy the closest relative. I couldn't do without it. It's been shredding twigs, sticks, branchlets and brashings for donkeys years, and not complained once.

              There, that's jinxed it......

The cutter cuts against an aluminium plate, its recommended that if it stops cutting properly you turn the black knob on the side, with the motor running, this cuts into the ali plate and slowly closes the gap that can form after lots of chipping, not had to do that yet with mine and its done a lot of fairly heavy chipping in the last 6 yrs.

I've no idea if it's genuine, but there's one on ebay for £120 this evening

I have one made by Lynx. I got it randomly from eBay as I needed one in a pinch and it's been bulletproof for years. The bad news is that I've never seen another like it and can't find any trace of them online either :dunno:

When I need a new one I'll be looking at a small chipper I think
