I went shopping in ASDA the other day, and, after over a decade of considering tinned food something a bit alien, I found myself approaching one of these bluish flat tins of BENTO pies which look a bit like a UFO and happened to be on offer (but that alone is not why I took the step)...

Anyway I bought it and dutifully cooked it and eat it and I must say that I don't dislike it! And it grew up so much in the oven, it was unbelievable.

PS can the container be reused?

Mira! You're destroying all my illusions! Italians are supposed to be above this sort of thing; they use lovely fresh ingredients to make simple but delicious, healthy meals. Fray Bentos is strictly for British bachelors who don't wash their socks much and live alone except for a ferret and an army of cockroaches.

The tins probably make good frisbees.

          Dear Miraflores -

You have awoken memories !! - Like you I haven't had a F/Bento pie for decades! - but in our case four decades. When we started out in married life neither of us could boil an egg !, so the FB pie was the mid-week luxury.

Happy to say that the culinary skills of both of us have improved, somewhat. - No slight of course on the famous pie, which must be in these straightened times still a very economical meal. (particurly so with a few home grown veggies, which of course all of our members can provide)

As, Hubert Gregg used to say 'Thanks for the Memory'

Fray Bentos pies all the way .... best one is the chicken and mushroom

use to get these in south africa ... when I was in my 20's , my mates and I used to go fishing/camping often to a river that had a secluded spot, no-one nearby, a small waterfall and excellent river fishing (carp/yellowish and barbel (catfish) ...

late at night, after we had a proper BBQ and a several beers (and some other green stuff), ... serious fishing/conversation and a fray bentos pie (lid 3/4 way removed) on a low wood fire (i.e dying embers) as a late night snack

brings back memories .... however, the downside:

even today, it is very difficult to open the tin with a normal old fashioned tin opener

Nearly right, then. The crispiness is probably not the puff pastry. :heehee:

You are right Alex, i'm probably being too harsh, i'm just distrustfull of the meat industry after being poluted by the "Vegetarian" Quorn pie that had Dead Moo Moo in it.

I'm sure Fray Bentos are fine upstanding Moo Moo Murderers that wouldn't dream of putting anything but the finest cuts in their tinned pies that get shipped halfway across the world only to end up in a pound shop.

The profit in putting the finest cuts of beef into such a product & then selling it for next to nothing must be astronomical.:fingerdrum:

Oh dear. I'm sure poor Mirafiores didn't think that her innocent post about a pie would end this way. If it's any consolation, I once had to do some research about the contents of a well known brand of burger. Fray Bentos couldn't be any worse.
