Tins of beans, peas etc....

I had a daft idea the other day when opening a tin. Why not cut holes in the bottom of the tin and next year sow beans in a bean tin, peas in a pea tin, tomatoes in a tomato tin etc. :D

I would then know by the label what was in which tin, and not have so much stuff in the recycling bin. Sorted :gnthb:

why not-it`s a bit contrived but hey so is garden design.

 

Blackthorn, a great idea, only one snag, though. I assume these plants are going to be watered? In which case, the labels will fall off.:thumb::wink:

 

If you use a tin of mixed vegetables your system will fall down!

 

...and the paper labels would probably go all soggy and fall off

 

You could get around the tins not being the right size by using a tip I heard of...

Use those tins with ring pulls, keep the lid, open the bottom with a tin opener, and then pot them upside down. The gap at the bottom (where the lid is) lets water out, and when it comes to potting on - you just push the bottoms up.

Having said not tried it - am using plastic trays from mushrooms and other such objects for my potting next year.

As for the paper lables falling off, they will be labelled as well, just a bit of fun really. I suppose until they do fall off you could have at-a-glance rows of vegetables. Won't work for spuds though :D
