In the last few months my front lawn has become covered in tiny moss like flowers, they are not really flowers but I don't know how to describe them, they look a bit like tiny pieces of moss and they are a yellow colour. The lawn was not in good condition and has quite a lot of dandelions. I had intended to spray the dandelions but these yellow flowers just cover the whole of the lawn, they are very close to the soil, not much height at all, any advice would be welcome.

Sounds like Medicago lupulina, commonly known as black medick, nonesuch, or hop clover. Lawn weedkiller is supposed to kill it. Never has here though.

Hello popperoo :sign0016: to GC and nice to have you with us :)

Does what you have look like this as the leaves come in green and a redish/burgundy...if so Oxalis :)

Medicago lupulina gets my vote as a really tiny weed lawn. MEDICAGO LUPULINA 10-07-2011 15-58-46.JPG MEDICAGO LUPULINA 10-07-2011 15-58-53.JPG

Thank you for your replies, it doesn't look like Oxalis. The leaves are tiny a bit like cress and the flowers are not petals, they look like a collection of about small pin heads and the yellow flower, if you can call it a flower, is quite dull. It seems to have spread quite rapidly and it is in very large clumps. As I said the lawn hasn't been looked after for quite while now because of health problems. I realise I am not explaining myself very clearly!

                Still think Palustris is correct.

Goodness a pic would make this so easy.

OK...now try to have a close look at a single leaf/leaflet.
Pick one and lay it on a white sheet of paper.
                Now describe it.
                It is it like grass.?
Or has it 3 rounded leaves on a stalk.

medicago lupulina leaf - Google Search:

Or is it tiny like this.

Sagina procumbens leaf - Google Search:

When you pull a plant up does it have shoots that run across the ground or does it come out as a single small plant?

I have looked at both of these and I think it is medicago lupulina!! The flowers on mine are not such a bright yellow but everything else seems to fit.
