So I was doing some tree maintenance at the weekend and a branch fell down and caught the top of my 6 ft Cordyline australis and knocked off the growing tip. Will it sprout again or make it branch? I hope I haven't killed it.

Odd. I've never had sprouts from a cordyline. How are they with Christmas dinner?

Time will tell, I lost some cordylines in the great death a few years ago, but they all started again from the base. You don`t want that as it looks a lovely sized tree, so fingers crossed :fingers crossed: it will make a new growing tip.. Let us know John as it will be interesting to know.

It should resprout from the base.

I thought that I had dug three out years ago but they are still coming through, I wouldn't worry, I think they can survive earthquakes.

You really don`t want it to sprout from the base, even if it doesn`t start a new tip, which may spoil the shape anyway, would it be okay to just stop how it is, which may involve removing any base shoots and growing tips in the wrong place.

Good thoughts Pam, I would like it to sprout again from the top rather than at the base. I have in the past removed side branches to encourage a single trunk. I had a closer look at the damage yesterday and there were actually two growing points knocked off, I'm wondering if it's like nipping the top of bedding plants to make them produce bushier growth. I'll keep you posted.
