Good afternoon everyone as you all know woo loves his Roses not only because of cherished memories he has but because they give so much back when looked after ,(which only takes a modicum of our time) compared to most things in our lives ,I have roses which are 20/25 years old,if you divide the initial cost at purchase by the years they keep giving us beautiful and bountiful different coloured blooms it isn't even pennies.

The Rose has its own language ;)

A rose can say I love you and want you to be mine,
A rose can say I thank you for being so very kind,
A rose can say congratulations, whatever the occasion may be,
A rose can say I miss you and wish you were here with me,
A rose can say I'm sorry if I've hurt you in any way,
A rose can say get well soon, May God bless you today,
A rose can say I wish you happiness, and the best for you each day.
A rose can say farewell when someone goes away,
A rose can say hello, I'm thinking of you today,
There's just so many wonderful things that a rose can say,
A rose can say goodbye when a love one is laid to rest,
No matter what there is to say, a rose can say it best.

There rests my case for the defence of the rose;):blue thumb:

:ideaIPB: I've got a plant growing which is just like these. (The grass with red/orange/yellow flowers.) Do you happen to know what they're called?

Also, that flower bed looks to be about the same size as my entire garden. Jealous! :cry3:

Now look 'ere young Woo, just because you are a rose expert you mustn`t go telling me off - I can't help it, although I love the roses, (I have far too many) - they just will not behave for me.
They will be going out among the day lilies - and that`s that. If you like, you can come over and give them the magic touch. I will pay up to ten bob a day, and throw in coffee, tea, biscuits and the occasional cake.
I do NOT grow plastic flowers - they would probably play me up as well :embarrassed:

What a jolly good job we all have our own favourite plants - it would be so boring if every garden in the country looked the same!

Why thank you @Tetters my dear friend ,I would certainly pop over and only ask for some Irn/Bru instead of tea,and if possible just a few vanilla slices, definitely no charge cos your a mate;) I'm not really an expert its just that after 70 years amongst the Roses even a monkey would know a little about them:heehee:

You have a lovely Sunday afternoon and you will eventually find that Roses do grow on you my friend:smile::blue thumb:

Ah that makes sense... since they look like lillies :redface: Never made that connection before :noidea: cheers!

and yeah... garden ninja... :heehee: I've got a really strong knowledge about random categories of gardening but for the rest of it I know very little (like names of plants) It's either know a topic inside and out or don't know a single thing about the topic. I think a few years ago when I signed up to GC, garden ninja was the closest phrase I could think of that described me. Now, the more I think about it the less apt it seems :th scifD36:

                    Hi all,
@wiseowl , I'm with you on this one. You only have to prune them once a year, water and feed them. What's so hard about that ?

I think the trouble nowadays is all this " instant gardening " , buy a plant in full flower, plant it and then chuck it at the end of the season. That's not gardening at all.

Prune twice a year .....in autumn to reduce wind rock and again in spring....spray often for disease and pest, etc. nothing hard about that.
Now compare to most of my perennials that need none of this! :)
Even the incomparable Christopher Lloyd expressed his misgivings about roses!

I've never pruned in Autumn. If they're planted well and well rooted they don't suffer from wind rock.

I am going to be defensive on this as I only have an area approx 7 x 15 feet and that has to provide cut flowers for summer and like Silu states the weather in Scotland does not promote an abundance of rose blooms to suffice, in fact more than half the blooms are destroyed with wet weather.

I agree with the `instant gardener`though as most of my neighbours do that. We have the council park dept that grows the flowers for the areas flower beds and in Early spring the public are allowed in to buy potted garden plants, one neighbour (beautiful garden) must spend hundreds of £s each year.
