When is the right time to start the mowing season

I thought I might as well start the old argument going by saying I mowed my lawn last Monday :).

    :dh:Oh no! not already:D
I normally wait until the peace and quiet is shattered by the Sunday morning mower brigade before I start mine. At the moment the lawns are too water logged anyway.

I mowed the first week of the year. It was getting shaggy, and I'm really glad I did as we have had intense cold since, and I don't reckon I'll get another chance for a bit, and it looks smart enough now, whereas I reckon it would be looking even more of an eyesore otherwise!

When I say "mowed" I maybe mean "rolled the moss" though ;)

I tend to cut late and comparitvly low with the aim of timeing the last cut with the end of the growing season thus leaving it tidy. My last cut for 08 was around the begining of December and nothing since.

The ground has either been too wet or frozen to think about anything this year, the most ive done is to blow off leaves and edge.

Wow that's a nice house/garden you have there. I'm not jelous and I'll reconsile myself with 2 facts the first I can't even fill my little garden with flowers yet and 2 it will take you much longer to cut your grass.

I bet you're going to tell me you have a ride on lawnmower or something now aren't you....

I watched a recorded episode of Gardener's World showing the contenders for "Gardener of the Decade". They showed their gardens, and at least two of them had herbaceous borders that were a) huge and b) in their first year. I couldn't believe how well established they looked. Probably just good soil preparation, reasonably sized starter plants, and good after-care. So it can be done!

Yes, probably so (one of the contestants owned a Nursery!!). Still looked surprisingly established.

I'm not a fan of mowing the grass, but as I keep encroaching into it to gradually to increase the size of the borders, hopefully I won't have to worry about doing that for much longer and whatever is left can be cut with the strimmer! :hehe:

If I tried to do it at the moment the mower would sink into the "swamp" without a trace :(

Lovely looking stripes you got there Shiney:gnthb:

    Thanks :thumb:

There is quite a long story behind how we ended up with a large garden room instead of the little wooden summerhouse that we wanted. Short version. My mother died a few years ago and the proceeds of the sale of her bungalow was shared between my sister and myself. We did some internal improvements to our house and built the garden room. We look at it and say "Thanks Mum." :) :luv:

This is the rest of it.

We don't have a ride on mower :hehe: and that lawn is about one fifth of our grass. We moved out into the countryside in order to have a big garden and it really keeps us busy. :)

Yep! It's nearly as big as our house (which is a three bedroom bungalow) and only cost a fraction of the price. :flag:
