Hi it has been suggested to me that water that has had tobacco in it (not sure whether this is used or new tobacco) strained and then sprayed on the plants will rid them of aphids & the like.

Has anyone ever heard of this & if so, did it work?

I'm going to get some ant killer tomorrow cos they are spreading & farming aphids, whatever, over quite a few plants now but wondered if I could use this 'water'.

    cheers

Nicotene spray, highly illegal I'm afraid, you could get hung drawn and quatered for that these days.

Apparently if you boil up old dog ends it works, but I've never tried it.

Not sure about that Pete, mine (at work) is in a poison store, I'll have to check with my supplier to see if it has been withdrawn or not!!

tobacco is poisonous also for humans, and by sure tobacco (sigarette ends, being the most common example)
diluted in water does't do bugs any favour...

Hi. Tobacco water works fine. Get a 1 gall. container and fill it with water. Get all the smokers (those of us still alive:D) to put their cig ends in it. After a week filter it out and use it in a spray. Been using it for years. Kills everything, ( including us contributors:D). Shows how effective it is, nothing but nothing feeds on Nicotiana plants;)

Nicotine spray was certainly banned for the domestic gardener about 30 years ago. It is deadly to humans and greenfly. It will even cause problems if you get it on your skin. To anyone even thinking about using it, don`t. Why do you think they have banned smoking?

I wouldnt try it on edible crops but for non edibles then go for it.

For all the nay sayers, Spilling permethrin on your hands or liquid derris wont do them a lot of good either. Just wear glove.

For aphids I use a trade permethrin concentrate ( Toppel or a similar name)

No, Fancy, I'm not winding you up!
It kills blackfly, greenfly, caterpillars, the lot. Extremely effective. It's non systemic so it doesn't enter the plant. As a precaution I'd do what PG says and not use it on edible plants. But in theory, it shouldn't be any more toxic than other insecticides you use on edible crops and are told not to eat them for two weeks after use. As a contact poison it should wash off the plants after a little while but, obviously, there were never residual toxicity tests done on it so maybe not on edible plants.

Just be warned that it kills ALL insects, so bees and hover flies and ladybird larva go too!
