Just checking to see whether everyone else is and has been enjoying a nice crop of tomatoes except me???????

I have 3 varieties this year in a large pot on the patio - Alicante, Moneymaker and Sun Baby (must be ironic naming in this country :p ).

Looks like I have plenty of green tomatoes but only been able to eat some of the Sun Baby (which I'd recommend if you like a very tasty yellow tomato).

Is it just me who has tons of green ones?

In previous years I'd normally be eating all 3 varieties for a few weeks by now.

This year I have tried Supersweet 100 and Outdoor Girl in a grow bag and so far had only two tom's off each! They are laden with green fruit and do seem to be a tad late this year too:confused:
Oh...and Tumbler in a hanging basket which is also with no ripe fruit!!

Hiya Biker, I can't tell you how sick I am of sun warmed, juicy, soft, ripe, tasty tomatoes and the reason for that is that I haven't had any  . I also made the fatal mistake of choosing a variety with the 'S' word in it ( Sungold ) along with Tigerella, Gardener's Delight, and Alicante. The odd one or two of the smaller fruits are beginning to colour up but not many and I live well down in the southwest, looking out of my window at this moment I see what could be a day in early March. Don't suppose that makes you feel any better but you are not alone, cheers T.D.

I'm in Hants. As I have said elsewhere, I have "tumbling tom" in the long basket at the back of the bungalow and they are facing south east. we started eating ripe ones back in early July, and they keep coming, but the real success are the "Gardeners Delight" in the small greenhouse. My daughter in law grow them from seed on her window sills. When I got some of them, they were about 18 inches tall and very spindly. I put them into two grow-bags and they have been fantastic. We have been eating them since half way through July, and we are also having to supply neighbours to get rid of some of them. My wife has made lots of pots of tomato and onion chutney. ( I also had to lift all my red and white varieties of onions in late July). Not sure why I have had this success, when so many are complaining of unripe ones:confused: It must have something to do with the varieties that you are growing? Both of those that I have mentioned are small in diameter. Last year I grew Gardeners delight both in the greenhouse and outside. The greenhouse was good that year also, but those outside died off pretty quickly, I think that was blight.

Well stony sounds like you have some good performers for this new type of summer we are having and may have to get used to ;)

Be interesting to hear of others experiences with varieties/location.

Like so many others, my outdoor tomatoes (Moneymaker, Marmande) have fruited well but small and green so far. I am getting a few ripe cherry tomatoes from Patio Pearl, but my other cherries (can't remember variety) are all still very green. Looks like a bad year for most of us. I would agree with Stony that the smaller sized fruiting varieties seem to be coping best this year.

Plenty of toms on my outdoor bush Alicante's...no red one's yet. As 'sub arctic plenty' are back on T&Ms list...will grow them next year...they will go red in any weather...cherry tom like Gardeners Delight. Bush of course.:thumb:

Tweaky, I have just Googled 'sub arctic plenty' and to my astonishment find that it actually exists, I was convinced that you were having a bit of fun. Now, if there is a variety called 'grey, wet, windy and overcast bountiful' I will be sorted for next year :D.Seriously though, thanks for that, normally I choose varieties known for good flavour but that becomes a bit academic if they are not ripening naturally on the plant, :thumb: cheers T.D.

I was still typing while you posted that Capney, the sun must have been having problems with it's sat nav. I would have thought that when it saw Hatfied & The North it would have realised it was going the wrong way . Not bad for 'a humble crop' :thumb:.

Ye of little faith....would I lie to you:rolleyes: Yea, I do joke around, but I attempt to restrain myself on serious bits.

I can assure you, they do taste lovely, or delicious. I grew them years ago then the seeds became unavailable...but now they are back....my advice...try a few plants next year.:thumb:

I like a plant you can rely on, especially if we get weather like this again next year.
