I'm a total novice to the gardening world but I was thinking of trying to grow some tomato plants (reminiscing back to when I used to help my dad do them many years) in pots or maybe even grow bags.

I brought two packets of seeds and as the instructions on the back are quite ambiguous I was wondering if anybody had any hints, tips or links to websites of interest, in the world of tomato plant growing :)

    Thanks in advance.

I grew my first tomatoes last year from seed.
I started the seeds in my windowsill in small plastic boxes. I sowed them in special mould meant for germinating seeds. When the small plants were about 10 cm I planted them outside in the garden next to a wooden fence. And if it wasn't for those damn killer slugs, they would have been fine. But they ate them, so watch out.
I later bought some new plants from the supermarket, which survived. I got hold of a growing bag and a box for self-watering the bag. As the plants grew bigger they were supported by sticks. I pinched off any smaller shoots between the main stem and the leaves on the main stem.

    Have fun :thumb:

    Pruning side shoots
    Another thread
    And another

    Removing leaves

    Blight

Do NOT take all the leaves off your tomato plants like Got to YouTube and find video oFta7aWXCdU "How to Set Up a Low Maintenance Garden : How to Prune a Tomato Plant: Gardening Tips" - I ain't posting the link here because it should not be promoted.

Sorry, I had loads more links but when GC moved to the new site the threads got mucked up and the links no longer work.

Hello there, i think you will really enjoy growing tomatoes, i have started close to 50 kinds, and i might add a few more.
The only things that i do, are add coffee grounds, they love it, and i was told by an old farmer that when its really hot outside, to only water the base of the plant and not to spray the whole plant, i have followed that rule and mine do great.

Planted tomatoes seeds for the first time yesterday. Have picked up some great tips here. They are in a propagator on my kitchen window sill. Cheers Barb.
