Usual suspects are over/under watering. Are they in growbags or containers? If growbags have you got some decent drainage holes and are certain that water is escaping from the bottom. Does the affected plant look any different to the others? Anything nibbled the bottom of the plant (slug/mouse maybe)?

Think it could be possibly over watering , they are in pots stood in gravel trays so may be too much water .

Pretty simple to cure then, as they are in trays you can easily see when you have overwatered. Tomatoes don't like to be kept humid anyway so make sure the gravel is dry. Lets hope your plant recovers.

You will get some tomatoes this season even by planting now Barry. Good luck.

Excuse me for butting to this thread, I have just recently started growing tomatoes and this past weekend I was going away, to ensure that the plants got at least some water I stood the pots in larger buckets and half filled them with water - Is that bad for them, even on a temporary basis?

    Thanks

Hi SandLake, yes it is bad for tomatoes, anything longer than a couple of hours sitting in water will start to kill off the roots.

An alternative might be to stand the bucket higher up and put a rag in it, over the lip, and hanging down onto the Tomato pot.

Adjust thickness of rag so that water is transferred at appropriate rate :)

The rag acting like a wick Kristen? Yes that would work, its something I've done in the past I also wrapped the rag in a plastic to avoid it drying out. I'd set it up a couple of days before you go away just to make sure it is working properly.

"The rag acting like a wick"

Yup, that's what I should have said!

    Some other ideas:

Use a bucket to make a water reservoir at the bottom and a container for the compost on top:

    Hozelock Water reservoir
    http://www.hozelock.com/watering/auto-watering/complete-kits/green-house-watering-kit-2822a.html

Hozelock Water Butt Drip Irrigation kit (needs a timer) [available a couple of quid cheaper on eBay]
    http://www.easywatering.co.uk/acatalog/hozelock_water_butt_kit_2816.html
and water butt tap with Hozelock adaptor:

    Reservoire bag with drippers:

but it is continuous so will run out quite quickly. System with a timer better, I think.

Thanks Kirsten for those sites - I don't think my tomatoes are getting enough air circulation in one of the greenhouses right now. My 'gardeners delight' cherry toms are in a different greenhouse - doing well, but getting way too tall - about 5' now!

I'm not sure what you mean Natalie, 5' tall is a good thing I would say, unless they are weak and straggly?
