I have two 'Tomato Totem' doing very nicely in the conservatory and are laden with fruit. In June I was given four very small tomato plants. They were brought on from seed. I think
the lassie who gave them to me said they were cherry tomatoes from last year. These plants are now about 3 feet tall and are just starting to flower. I don't have a great deal of experience with cherry tomatoes but I always thought they were smallish plants. If she used seed from last years crop and they were hybrids I wouldn't get Cherry toms would I?
How can I tell if they are regular tomatoes at this stage. The flowers look quite fine but then the plants are quite spindly.
    Grateful for any info:)

My cherry toms (Gardeners Delight) are the same height as all the varieties, so size wise you shouldn't worry. I've always found that Cherry Tom varieties do look a bit more spindly than others.

There really is no way to tell right now if your unknown plants are going to be OK or not, when F1 Hybrid plants are used to produce seed then the results will be variable and probably poor, but no-one will be able to guess until the fruit forms. Not all tomatoes are F1 hybrids anyway so you will probably be lucky.

My advice is to keep on nuturing them and fingers crossed :)

Thank you John. Should I remove the side shoots or leave them?

    No - leave them on!

    Sorry just kidding :D

tweaky's "probably" right - I say "probably" because some cherry toms are bush type, and you just let them grow with no pinching out. But as you don't know what variety you have its best to remove the side shoots. :)

Never heard of them being called axles before tweaky - must be a welsh thing?
