This morning I noticed that my most of my greenhouse tomato plants (Shirely and Gardener's Delight all about 10"-12" tall) have flower buds on them already - to me, this seems a bit early.

Considering what happened last year (i.e. the plants were a lot taller and much later to flower and set fruit) does this just mean I'll get an earlier crop (conditions permitting)? Or is there something I should 'do' to them?

They are fine :) Mine have been in flower for a couple of weeks, and yup you'll just get an earlier crop than last year.

Try to keep the greenhouse above 10C at night though, and tap the plants around midday if poss (otherwise at some other time), and mist with water, to help them pollinate. They don't pollinate as easily early in the season.

      Thank you very much Kristen.

I'm glad now that my first successful go at growing tomatoes from seed (:happydance:) didn't take place until everyone else's were already transplanted. Mine were only just ready for transplanting this week and I'm hoping - if they survive that - that I'll have some late(r) toms as well (although what I'll do with 3 dozen plants is anyone's guess!)

Ever get the feeling that it's all going too well :heehee:

Well done Fidgetsmum, it has been an exceptional start to the growing season so yes you should get some nice early tomatoes. They are quite tough plants and can take a bit of rough handling.

      36 plants! :phew:

The main thing I'm worried about is a late heavy frost.

LOTS of people will be caught out this year if that happens. Everywhere I go I see Runners half way up their poles ... I haven't even sown mine yet (as per calendar, not 'coz I'm being lazy this year)

I'll feel a bit of a twit if there is no late frost. I really ought to plant just-a-few early, and the main batch at the normal/safe time ...

Us gamblers are going to find out tonight if the early plantings survive the predicted frost. I can't imagine Runner beans half way up poles will survive.

They will under Mr Shineys' special clotches:dbgrtmb: If they don't then i'm going to feel like a right twit tomorow.

Solar heating is working well in the caravan (Solar heating in this case being 4 concrete blocks placed where they absorb the suns heat during the day and act as a radiator at night:thumbsup:)

Bad germination with the red mullet beans so far, only got a couple of them to trial.

Copied your idea this evening, if it doesn't work, well just sow some more.

You have them in bed with you? Like a warming pan? :loll:

      Tee Hee:happydance:

Not got to that stage yet

Tis lovely in there at the moment, especially when the sun comes round in the morning. There is nothing better than waking up in your veg patch with the sea only a mile away.

Will be oak smoking the catch tomorow morning, then, after work, be off to catch some more.

Its coming to that time of year when the dinner plate is full of home grown, forraged or caught food. Always a good feeling. Especially when its still complimented with last years chutney, beetroot & apple sauce.

Blimey, ever tried smoking a bucket of fish in the dark ? The wheel barrow was the chosen instrument of implementation. worked reasonably well as a cold smoker. Have open frozen the fillets & have put the smoked off cuts in the fridge to be made into smoked fishy paté tomorow.

I now smell like a fishy lumberjack on a windy day with the sea behind him & a blazing forest full of fish in front of him, with a dash of chilli & bayleaves thrown in.

        Wonder if i'll score tonight:yess::D
