Hi all, a couple of my tomato plants in the greenhouse have started to look very sorry for themselves ! the others seem fine and they are all watered the same. The ones that look sad are by the door.
Question : how long should the door be open in hot weather ?

You shouldn`t put toms by the door, Iggy. They go to the back of the greenhouse, where the air is moister. On the other hand, your cucumbers need to be next to the door where the air is drier.:thumb:

David OR Dai, either will do.:D Are they in the ground? If so, then I would say no. Give them a fine misting with water several times a day and see if that helps.

great Dai it is then, they are in large pots, so wouldn't be a problem to move.

If they are forecasting 3 degrees of frost, then, no. Otherwise, it shouldn`t hurt.:thumb::D

David, are you sure cues need drier air than toms, I 've always thought it the other way around.

In fact I would say, toms need as much ventilation as possible at this time of the year.

Hi folks. Interesting. I seem to remember having this discussion some time ago, as to whether or not toms need dry or humid. As I recall, there was no conclusion, or should I say...consensus. I would really like to know for sure. Cheers...freddy.

David, I've always kept cucumbers cool & moist and toms hot and dry, I have two greenhouses set up to keep them that way. When I just had one greenhouse it was too much of a compromise and neither of them did very well for me. Interesting as I thought I had it right, but if it works the other way round as well, then I'm confused.

Me too, my Cues are at the back, and I don't open the vent down that end

My RHS book says "Greenhouse cucumbers grow best at high temperatures and high humidities" but is silent about the conditions that Toms need.

Ivory - do they grow cucumbers outside in the same conditions in Italy?

its not much of a scientific study, but looking at my late-planted Toms this morning I noticed that they are taller near the door, and shorter near the Cues at the back (which has less air; including the end vent not being opened)

kristen: that's called perspective. With your massive greenhouse, when you are looking into the far end things look much smaller!

    ;)
