Has anyone else on here own a Toyota that has had a recall letter for an airbag inflator replacement?
Mrs Strongy has a 05 Yaris and received a recall letter last June, I checked my Corolla (also 05) and it was not on their recall list. Then I get a letter in September saying mine is being recalled for the same problem.
So far neither has been called in! Is anyone else still waiting?
Naturally since then we only drive at 5mph to avoid airbag failure in an accident.:rolleyespink:

@strongylodon - give your local Toyota dealer a call and make an inquiry regarding the latest recalls.
When I worked in that particular industry, it was not uncommon for my "team leader" to plead 'ignorant' of the latest recalls ("I can't know all of them!" ) and tell me to pass the call to him. (Ha! We were commission centred: enough said! ;) )
If it's an official recall, your local Toyota dealer should a) know about it and b) make the repair for free.
These recalls should not go ignored. Please call your local dealer

And whatever you do, don't lose the letter.

I'm not 100%, but I'm fairly sure that the manufacturer /dealer stops being liable once the car reaches 10 years old, even if a potential manufacturing fault is identified, because after that, it is considered too difficult to be certain if a fault is a design/build fault or age related wear and tear.

I think it's all linked with the, at least, 3 year problem with the Takata made airbags. Takata supplies more than a dozen global car firms so the problem is huge:doh::dunno::coffee:e.

I rang them sometime ago and of course I was told to wait for a recall date........
I'll give them another call late today.

Just wondering, but in a situation like this, could you not technically, ask for a full refund on the price ofthe car, on the basis that by their own admission, they have sold goods that are not 'of serviceable quality ' or 'fit for intended purpose', and are therefore in breach of the implied terms of the contract of sale, as per the sale of goods act.

I doubt very much that a claim like that would be successful, but I bet if the dealer thought you might try, I bet they'd be less inclined to fob you off. If only because they might conclude it would be quicker and simpler to just sort it than to have to get into a tedious correspondence exchange.

Two of my vehicles have been affected by this recall. One had the work completed within 4 days. The other is still waiting, and has been referred not only to Consumer Protection, but the manufacturers also.

The reason for this being that the dealer would only change part of the wiring loom on the drivers side, and not the DAB and PAB modules as required by the recall.

For those that are not aware, at the last estimate, over 14 million vehicles world wide are affected, and with one manufacturer, 55 deaths have occurred in just the USA. The problem as I understand it is that high levels of humidity cause the air bags to suddenly inflate, and shrapnel from them causes death or injury.

The first recalls for this problem were in 2009...the solution used then did not solve things...

I have just contacted my local Toyota dealer who, when I asked about the Yaris recall last June said they would contact me when the parts are available, now it appears they will order the parts and let me know when they arrive, ie on a back order, not exactly treating it as urgent!!!!

Blimey! I would not want to drive in a car that had that problem, sorry Strongy I'd be on the phone every day and would tell them they had to come and pick it up as well. The only saving grace, may well be wrong on this, is that USA built cars have larger and bigger airbags than the UK to cater for the larger and bigger people.

Although my recall is not on a Toyota, that sounds very much like the dealer said to me. They have been "waiting for parts" since September last year. These turned out to be the incorrect ones anyway. That is the part loom that I mentioned above. As JWK said, get on the phone everyday.

Some US market cars have more complicated air bags on the front seat passenger side. They automatically adjust to the weight of the passenger. I'm lead to believe changing the PAB module on these is a nightmare...

One added difficulty for me...I'm nervous. This will be the first time ever one of my cars has been repaired in a workshop, and not by me.

Well, unfortunately, the recall procedure is handled by the Car Manufacturer and not the Dealer who is only acting as an agent in the matter. So the Dealer cannot carry out any recall action for a car unless the Car Manufacturer has authorised it for specific cars
Usually the car owner gets a letter requesting he take the car to the local Dealer and that letter is used as authority and reference by the Dealer who charges the Car Manufacturer for carrying out the repair/mod.

I understand that. But thinking slightly unconventionally, it occurs to me that the recall procedure probably doesn't supersede the sale of goods act. The recall letter is surely an admission that the goods, in this case the car, was not fit for its intended purpose when it was sold. Therefore the liability falls upon the seller of the car, ie the dealer, who in turn may make a counter claim against the manufacturer.

In a sale of goods act dispute, the dispute is rarely between the consumer and the manufacturer. It is always between buyers and seller. It's only between buyers and manufacturer if the buyer bought direct from the manufacturer, thus making the manufacturer also the seller.

Like I said earlier, I somehow doubt that the courts would pick it up, but it's an angle to use to kick up a stink if the dealer isn't pulling their weight.

I do agree with your thoughts, Clueless. Its time someone did decide to at least attempt some kind of legal action between buyers and sellers.

The motor trade at all levels in all countries has been duping the general public for far to long.

You would need serious financial resources and be around the age of 5 years old because you'd probably be into a case lasting several decades, not counting the years for appeals,:dunno::heehee:
