I wonder how many crashes per hour happen there.

    Apparently none.

There's a town in Holland that did away with traffic lights etcetera and they've had no accidents either.

Traffic ligfhts are basically there to "control" the traffic, they love to be in "control" over here.
There have been times when lights have been out of action, and the traffic flows much better than when they are working.#
I have a feeling they like congestion here, we are all heading for congestion charges.:frown:

What happened to the right turn filter arrows, they mostly seem to have been replaced with a full set of red amber and green arrow, so even if its clear to cross, you cant.
Its all designed to "control" and cause congestion

It depends on the junction. Sometimes its a nightmare when the lights break. When I lived in Sheffield my journey to work took me across a junction where I'd be on the comparatively minor road, trying to cross 6 lanes of major road. That was a nightmare when the lights broke. It was a case of wait for a gap, floor it, and pray that your car didn't choose that moment to let you down.

I can agree with that. Its like those stupid 'traffic calming' measures they put in where they force everyone to aim at each other head on. It doesn't help the road traffic, and it doesn't help the pedestrians trying to cross, who now have to wait longer to work out what two queues of traffic are going to do next. Then they whine that emissions and noise from traffic are too high. Well yes, Mr Transport Ministers, that would be because it takes a lot more energy to get a vehicle moving from stationary than it does to keep it moving once its already moving, and you keep forcing everyone to stop and start all the time.

In a town centre near me, they are doing 'improvement' works, part of which is replacing the traffic lights - in the interim the old traffic lights have been in barrels one temporary wiring, and they have gone faulty on numerous occasions; when only one filter light stopped working (all the other lights were fine) it was taking 50 minutes to cover a mile or so to get through the junction - when the lights went out all together, everything ran like a clockwork watch, and not a single delay.
