I have just bought some more trailing begonias for my baskets and pouches, they are all potted up and doing niceley, hopefully they will give me a wonderful display like last year. The problem I have is last year I stripped my baskets etc down, cleaned off compost and put all my begonias over winter into shallow compost and I lost them all, not one survived, no shoots nothing, it seems like a terrible wast sob sob plus I have had to buy another batch. What am doing wrong anybody as I dont want to lose this years after they have stopped flowering.

The overwintering place must be light, and cool but frost free. Most people remove them from their container and store them in newspaper or paper bags. Even in perfect conditions not all will survive; Gardening Which? trials achieved a success rate of 45%, but this does reduce the price somewhat!

Yep Liz is right bout the over wintering,i have had mine for many years, when the tubers get a bit big i cut them up (long as each one has shoots on ) therefore increasing the quantity of plants .
Mine are the "Flambouyant Begonias" though, Chiltern "plants" dept. sell them now i believe ,very worthwhile having !
Good Luck with yours . Same applies to over wintering them too.

Thanks for that info I left them in my unheated greenhouse over winter. I shall try putting them in brown bags in the garden shed. Ones I buy are Thompson and Morgan Illumination Mix thats all I know,,...

Ps so when do you take them out and re-pot up, March as I did? Cheers
