I've read Woo's section on climbing roses and understand that I need to train my roses in a zig sag climb around the arch they are on.

I have one of those standard arches with two vertical struts each side joined by horizontal struts. I have a rose and clematis planted at each side, so two roses and two clematis in total.

My problem is that the clematis have weaved themselves around all four struts, so if I weave the rose around the struts will it damage the clematis stems? Also the roses, planted last year, are quite tough on their trunks so I don't know how well I can weave them. They are about 5ft in height.

Hi Victoria Plum IMHO they will both grow together naturally as they are made for one another,The climbing Rose is not a natural climber and I do apologise if I have only pointed out one way of training, the rose will grow which ever way you train it,either in a zig zag or straight up or with just one twist round the upright,I usually find that they will respect each other and will compromise.Hope this helps:)

Yes woo that does help. Thank you.

I just wondered what I should do about the big cane growing straight up, should I cut it back, or just train new growth onto the zig zag pattern?
