    Hi, all

I posted earlier on the beginners' thread. Total novice, I'm afraid. I've a large, sectioned-off area at the back of my garden which is completely overgrown, mainly with nettles. I've received some great advice on the beginners' thread about how to tackle the nettles problem. Meanwhile, I'd be grateful for any help with these two pics taken within the same area. One is a bush with yellow flowers. Is this worth keeping? It's surrounded by the nettles. The other pic is a tree, whose branches are completely bare at the moment. Any ideas on what sort of tree it is, and whether I should just cut it down? (You can also see the aforementioned bush in this picture too.)

    Thanks a lot.

The only yellow shrub that I can think of that might be flowering now is Kerria japonica - I can't see the flowers very well but it may well be that.

Is the tree beginning to leaf out? From the general form it may be an ash - has it got black buds? If there's no sign of life yet it may be dead anyway. Worth keeping if not, but that dead, jagged branch low-down on the right could do with cutting away and tidying up. You also have the option of removing the back trunk to turn it into a single-trunk tree which might look neater.

    Hi, guys

Thanks for the initial advice. I'll take some better-quality pics of the bush tomorrow morning and post them here. I'll also do a closer inspection of the tree.

    Thanks a lot.

Attached is a better pic of the bush. Hopefully this helps. As for the tree - I couldn't get nearer to it on account of all the nettles! However, from a distance I'm pretty certain that there are no black buds or any other kind of growth on it. It looks very bare indeed.

      Thanks again everyone.
