tree/bush roots

I have just cut down a well established bush and the roots are very hard and difficult to remove, can anyone suggest something to help with the removal of the roots.

Crow bar, digging bar, mattock, pick, an old saw to cut thru the tougher roots.... and a load of grunting and groaning.
