    Hi everyone

I am an extremely new gardener, and really need some advice! I live right on the coast in West Wales, and have a long front garden that is like a wind tunnel. We've tried, several times, to put some trees in, but they just get wind burn and die. So sad!! I love trees, and I don't think a garden is a garden without them. At the moment we just have two long boring lawns, with the occasional bed, and I really want to build a garden around some lovely trees. Our soil is exceptionally good, the fabled perfect loam, rich and dark and full of worms and the perfect texture. But the wind!!! So, what trees would you recommend? I don't want any more fatalities. I prefer old fashioned gardens, so anything traditional would be preferable. Here's a photo looking down the garden, one half of it anyway, and you can see the now deceased trees in that. We have a lovely old stone wall between the garden and the road.

    Many thanks!

    Dee

Good old Blackthorn is as tough as old boots, and can easily tolerate coastal gales. In late winter/early spring, it is decked out in fragrant white blossom, and by late summer, it is decked on in deep blue sloe berries.
