Can anyone tell me if I have been very silly in applying fertilizer and if so what the consequences might be.
A year ago I had some very large trees planted, 5mtrs +. I did not give any fertlizer at the time of planting but I bought some B& Q shrub and tree food liquid concentrate for them which I have just applied. I bought a liquid fertilizer as I put membrane and bark around them so it is easier to apply. The bottle did not mention application rate but just said "for plants in soil beds double the dose to two capfuls per 5 ltrs of water. " The composition of the feed is: total nitrogen 9.00% phosphorus 3% and Potassium 6% with other added trace elements. I made up a ten ltr bucket full and poured around two trees. Afterwards I wondered if this was too much and if so will it harm rather than help the trees.
If I have added too much would a good watering around the trees help?

    Thanks

    Ann

So you put in 4 capfuls in 10 litres? - that sounds about right to me, its just the boost they need at this time of year. You have done the right thing and can sleep easy at night :thmb:

Sounds fine to me too. I tend to put a cupful of bonemeal around the base of mine each spring.

Anything that will give the trees a boost at this time of year is a good idea, and people tend to find a product that they are comfortable with and use that, be it liquid or granules, or rotten manure/compost.

As you have used a liquid feed, it could get washed out of the soil during the year, so an application in a month or so, and one late August/early September would not go a miss either.

As your trees a relatively young, I would water them, especially in dry spells, but away from the base of them, so that the roots are encouraged to go out from the trunk and 'find' water. I would use the the spread of the crown as a guide and water just outside of that. Going on the adage of 'what is above (the crown) is below (the roots)'

    Hope this Helps!
