    The blue one looks like a Ceanothus to me, and the one to the left looks like a Mahonia

    but could be wrong

        Although you'll read that they're generally thought to be fully hardy, I've lost two, I think more through very cold winds than frozen ground, so I would give it some protection in the winter (- why am I concerned about that with temperatures in the 30s?). Remember they do originate in California; sun,sun,sun.

        It's a tree and it must have been there for years so I presume it should be safe now. It would be impossible really to protect it anyway come to think of it.

        Yes, mine were quite about 5ft and several years old when I lost them.
