I walk past these quite often and am curious to know what species they are?

They look like Beech to me but can't be certain.

 

Maybe Hornbeam rather than Beech....
Carpinus betulus..... these are often clipped.

Compare leaves with Fagus sylvatica... beech.

Had a quick search looks like they may have been pleached,

I'd really like 2 either side of my front gate, unfortunately I only have a small garden and most avaialble to buy seem to be over 2.5 high
