Hi. Can anyone please identify this tree which is in the garden of my sons new house. It looks like it might be deciduous but as of today's date no sign of any leaves going yellow or likely to drop in the near future, so have to assume it maybe evergreen. Height of the tree is about 4 metres and a relatively neat rounded shape to the tree.

      @martyn bromley :)
Looks like a Bay tree to me
      bay tree - Google Search
      Info on and i quote
"Popular herb and decorative plant. Bay leaves are extensively used in cooking and they are also useful evergreen shrubs. Bay can be grown in a number of ways. It thrives in containers, especially if watered regularly and positioned in a sheltered spot. In the garden, bay trees grow as a large bushy shrub or small tree, reaching a height of 7.5m (23ft) or more. As they get larger, they can also be trained into interesting shapes. Bay will withstand temperatures down to around minus 5 degrees but wind will damage them more. If grown in a cold area they are probably best grown in a container and move to a sheltered spot in the winter"

Looks like a Bay Tree or bush to me.. Evergreen and member of the Laural family.;)
You can cut them hard back or shape.. A ball is the most popular, large or small trees .. Either way they are very vigorous growers and hard to kill..:thumbsup:

Ah! -silver surfer. I can always rely on you . Yes I had wondered that myself . It has the same shape leaf as magnolia varieties I am familiar with but I can only assume it has been pruned into this quite formal shape.
I am certain it is not a bay as suggested by others .
            Thanks for your input .

:) Martyn Well we all know that the sure way to tell if it had been a Bay is just to crush one of the leaves the scent is strong and unmistakable :blue thumb:

Sorry Beehappy but the leaf is completely the wrong shape for Laurus nobilis...bay tree.
            Bay has narrow leaves.

Martyn..please can you look for any large buds and add a pic to this thread

Ooops! Sorry Beehappy, my misunderstanding..thought you were still backing the bay tree id.

Please feel free to challange me any time.
Id from pics is not always easy or an exact science.

By the way Tetters it is not Magnolia stellata....which are deciduous.
Martyns pic shows a very healthy evergreen..no sign of turning colour/leaf drop.

Still want to see bud pics to be sure.... re Magnolia sp.
