I would like to know what this tree is. It's a late bloomer with a strong sweet odor.

Hi Stu in France. It looks like Catalpa Bignoides, the Indian Bean Tree. [IMG]

Hello Stu in France and welcome to GC!

I don't know what your tree is but it is lovely whatever it is.

As the English/French seem to be taking over the forum now, perhaps Hyla or krissy or Mona Lisa or ??? can identify it for you. [IMG]

    Enjoy!

Salut, le mec! Ã?â?¡a gaz? Chouette, ce forum, n'est-ce pas? [IMG]

Yep - they're right - Catalpa bignoides, and very popular here, too. Our local DIY shop even has a row of them outside it, and there are some in Carrefour car park as well. Great shade trees, of course - when we get round to planting our patch, I reckon we'll have ourselves a couple of 'em too....

    Bienvenue Stu in France.

Didn't know what your tree was, but I do now.

I told you this was a great Forum, didn't I?

Yes, folks, we know each other.

Thanks, everyone for such a quick and informative response. When we arrived here last October, I seem to remember having seen some sort of bean pod then on the tree. Now I wonder if they are edible beans?

Hi Stu and a warm welcome from me too.

I agree with the others about it being a Catalpa. Our kids have one in their garden, it's about 18 years old and quite large already. It gives wonderful shade so it might be nice to eventually build a table around it.
