Tree in hedgerow in S. Wales

    Goat Willow?????
    It can be quite variable.

    The leaves on S.caprea are not as long as these. It is more like Salix cinerea as far as the leaf is concerned, but that is a shrub rather than a tree.

    I was mainly going by the winter resting buds.

    Looks very much like willow to me, possibly a natural hybrid, although as I say they vary a bit from tree to tree, I find.

    I agree that it is some kind of Salix, but as you say, they do vary quite a lot.
