I would like some advice i have just put up another trellis fence its approx 16 feet long and 5 feet high what would the best be to plant so that it trails up and around the fence.

I wanted to avoid roses because i have some on another fence i was thinking maybe Fucias can you buy climbing (fuchias ??) so any suggestions from anyone would be a big help.

    Thanks.

Hi golfer. My own favourite is the clematis. For vigorous growth, the montana, but there is loads of choice. Just be careful to train it properly so the bulk of the weight is at the bottom. Otherwise it will bring the lot down. When I say vigorous, I mean vigorous. :D

Hi Golfer I agree with John and Paula although maybe not Montana it looks nice it May without a doubt but does grow really fast and in no time at all it will cover your trellis.

I made the mistake of planting three at my old house one to grow at the front of the garage, one at the back of the garage and another one near a hedge...needless to say Bob had to make a huge trellis for the devils on the garage they grew like crazy and the trunk got so HUGE and they out grew the trellis that run the full length of the garage!

The one near the hedge 'joined' the hedge and it became such a hard job even to cut the hedge back a little bit as the stems of the Montana kept getting stuck in the hedge cuters, electric blades and fingers don't mix well

I would plant a few different Clematis so you have many different colours/flowers and most of them are of course have an awful lot bigger flower than the Montana and also flower at different times through the year.

Golfer the only climbing fuchsia I know is "lady boothby" its not self clinging like a clematis but as the advantage it will not pull your trellis down.

    Walnut/Golfer,

I have three of the Lady boothby, new in this year, slow growing but very robust and healthy looking - can't say the same for my golden honeysuckle, stringy and sick but thumbs up for the Fuchsia, i have great hopes for them [IMG]

Could use clematis armandii its evergreen and has nice smelling white flowers in spring, or a passion flower which is semi-evergreen depending how frosty the winter is, and has lovely blue flowers all summer and autumn. [IMG]
